We developed the Tomcat integration for another group here at Virginia Tech to entice them to use the Jasig client; I implemented only the features I thought they needed.
If you have the energy and expertise to the Tomcat components into feature parity, that would be great. I can say that I found supporting more than one tomcat version a major hassle; their authentication API changes often. I have no idea what it looks like for TC8.
