Pameliya, What details do you have about your current deployment? Is it running in Tomcat?
Do you have access to the overlay that was used to build the current deployment or the current cas.properties file? Being new to CAS it might be helpful to have a start to finish guide, such as David Curry's (link below), to walk you through each of the major steps in the build and deployment process. The catch is that his guide is written for CAS 5.2.7 and you want to go to 5.3, which as others have already mentioned, will have some changes to the properties. The latest version of 5.2 is 5.2.9. It may be worth it to walk through the guide and install 5.2.9 just to get more familiar with CAS. Then you can jump up to 5.3.8.
