Hi Ana,
If you look in the wiki, there is some excellent documentation on the
various CAS clients that are available, including PHP & JAVA. What you are
looking for is definitely possible so get started by looking at the wiki:
http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/CASC/Clients.

If you haven't done it already, I'd start first with the CAS Server
setup. There are several basic requirements, like SSL, that you need to make
sure you have first, otherwise it makes it deploying the CAS clients to your
JAVA & PHP applications a LOT harder.

For each of your JAVA & PHP applications, the next step I'd recommend
is to review & document exactly what you need it to do for *YOUR* applications.
In each of your apps, are there pages that don't require authentication?
What is the minimum amount of information each application needs to identify a
user (i.e. - username, email address, full name, ...). If you don't realize
the authentication requirements for each application up front, it will make the
actual integration work more difficult to build & test.

So put simply, the best way to get started is in the planning. CAS has some
fantastic client code that makes integration fairy straight-forward, but I
would also expect that you may have to do a bit of coding in PHP to connect
your PHP applications to the phpCAS module. As for the JAVA client module, I
can't speak in detail to it as I haven't used it before.

HTH,
-Brian
