thanks Michael, That made sense so I compared the LDAP xmls (which work) with the SPEGNO xmls and there isn't anything different between the 2 except for the changes and I have also used Eclipse to validate the xmls and nothing bubbles to the top..... Argh!

My wild guess would be that one of the XML-formatted configuration files is not well-formed.
