I wonder if this has anything to do with the '-e ppolicy' part of the ldapsearch command.  If I leave '-e ppolicy' off it only returns Invalid credentials (49).  

Is it possible that the module isn't doing the equivalent of '-e ppolicy' to get the full error message?

Are you sure you're using the BindLdapAuthenticationHandler included
with the ldap-pwd-expiration module?  It compares the result to a
Regular _expression_ that should catch 'Password expired' and throws a
custom exception (ExpiredPasswordException)
