It turns out that an user account can't be used for both SPN and binding the LDAP server, my mistake. I still have problems though:
"CAS is Unavailable There was an error trying to complete your request. Please notify your support desk or try again." No log entries about an error, only this warning when Tomcat is starting: [org.jasig.cas.support.spnego.authentication.handler.support.JCIFSConfig] - found login config in system property, may overide : /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/cas/WEB-INF/login.conf I'd appreciate some help.
