Thanks Scott (and Harry, and Andy)! There must have been something more wrong than just the Schema. That fixed the current problem but exposed something else. I ended up merging my LDAP changes into that file that you linked to and everything is starting up fine now (and my LDAP authentication is working fine including searching for the user in the searchbase).
