I had hoped to review the source to get more insight, but that's not possible. I'd recommend you take a thread dump the next time it happens do some analysis; if you can also do a memory dump as well, that might shed some light on where the JRE meets the platform socket code. See the jstack man page for more information on taking thread dumps.
