I would recommend you don't tune anything until you get some data about the source of your bottlenecks. We use YourKit for profiling our apps, but there are other tools out there. Get some data first and see what the problem is. While the database is almost certainly the bottleneck, it would be good to have some evidence before you start swinging the hammer.
