Yes, we had similar X509 smartcards at the university that worked with CAS. We had a dual config username/pass (LDAP) or X509 that was configured according to this wiki entry. [1]

You should also check the list archive for X509 material. One of the threads i also paticipated in [2] could give you some first hand experiences from other people in the community around the x509 topic.
