I got some clarification from the network guy--all traffic for the portal, LMS and CAS servers pass through the load balancer, but only the inbound traffic to the portal and LMS are load balanced. Outbound traffic from the portal and LMS, and all traffic to and from the CAS server, treat the load balancer as a switch.
All of the machines are using the Sun JRE, version 1.6.0_16. We are using version 3.2.1 of the Java CAS client, and version 3.4.11 of the Java CAS server. BREAKING NEWS: After much monkeying around with our setup, it turns out that setting the SLB to switch-only mode for the physical LMS server not only seems to have eliminated this issue, but also increased the speed of page loads from the LMS dramatically. Apparently our load balancers are something like ten years old, and have evidently not aged gracefully. So we've eliminated the problem and then some, but are currently running without a fail-over for the LMS.
