One small follow-up to this...

With 3.5.X, do we still need a separate DB instance in order for us to use the 
web-based Service Manager or does EhCache take over this role as well?

I'd agree with that assessment.

For us the difficulty is always porting custom Webflow states to a new version. 
 This is a challenge any time the Webflow changes appreciably.  I would 
categorize the Webflow changes from 3.4 to 3.5 as minor but significant.  If 
you don't have any significant Webflow modifications, I would expect the 
upgrade to be straightforward if not trivial if you're using the recommended 
Maven WAR overlay process.

Not that I can think of.
