I could be mistaken, but I believe the account creation process for Liferay users does not include CAS beyond grabbing the username after a successful login. If you're basing your concern on the discrepancy between your AD and Liferay user count, it's likely that 5500 users just haven't logged into Liferay via CAS yet, so accounts have not been provisioned in Liferay for them.
I only have second-hand knowledge of Liferay, so any experts out there may feel free to correct me.
