I didn't go with DailyRollingFileAppender because of a comment in its
source recommending against using it for new deployments (some kind
of bug that loses log entries). The rolling.RollingFileAppender is
supposed to be an improvement.

Huh, news to me. We've used that component for every log4j-based
enterprise Java app we've deployed in the past 7 years and haven't had any issues with data loss or corruption. In any case I would appreciate your sharing a working roll+compress configuration if/when you get it working. I'm always looking for ways to improve and simplify operations, and getting rid of a cron job would one less thing to manage.
