Thanks everyone for your input! I started setting the SAML attributes (which I'm sure are still not correct), but then took a second look at the VHOST debug log (thanks Matt for pointing this out to me!) and realized that my self-signed cert is not being authenticated: MOD_AUTH_CAS: curl_easy_perform() failed (Peer certificate cannot be authenticated with known CA certificates) So am researching this now (very tiny baby steps...)

If you can use SAML attributes from your CAS server, I would recommend doing so with git master. See the "Quickstart Installation" section for a simple example.
