I encourage you to take some time to understand TLS/SSL in further detail by reading the references Carl mentioned. It would be time well spent. If you want to go further with a more academic treatment of the underlying cryptography, Chapter 2 of Applied Cryptography [1] by Bruce Schneier is an excellent resource. I see there are about 100 different ways to do this in different OS’s different configurations. True, but there are also commonalities where understanding one platform well (e.g. Java) will help with others.
