Can you try,
FacesContext facesContext = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
user = 
(HttpServletRequest)(facesContext.getExternalContext().getRequest()).getRemoteUser();

Am not sure if,

FacesContext facesContext = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
user = facesContext.getExternalContext().getRemoteUser();

does the same.
