We (marc-antoine garrigue and me) have used such a fonctionnality in production. Your implementation (closed source at the moment and only for LDAP) is described in the above link. BTW I have already gave you more details (on the esup-cas-fr mailing list) on what you should do to implement such a functionnality with your SQL database.
