Please excuse the cross-postings...

The JA-SIG board has had informal discussions with JA-SIG Member
representatives and uPortal developers for some months about two new
organizational models we plan to roll-out: 1) the Member-elected Board of
Directors, and 2) the Project Steering Committee. We intend to begin an
off-cycle election for two board positions and a uPortal Project Steering
Committee next week. This email is meant to alert you to the upcoming
elections and to point you to additional information.

The board elections will replace one director position that has been vacant
and will add an additional position to the board. Nominations for these
positions will be open, and nominees will be selected by a vote of the
JA-SIG Membership.

The Project Steering Committee model will begin with the uPortal project. The
steering committee will be composed of two representatives chosen by the
current group of committers; one board representative or appointee; and
three other stakeholders from the community who will be chosen by JA-SIG
Members through the election process. This committee will serve as the
governing body responsible for the strategic direction and operational
oversight of the uPortal project and will act as an advocate for the
project. Our intent in forming this group is to ensure that key decisions
about uPortal direction are made by a group of stakeholders that is
representative of our community.

Additional information may be found at a new "Governance" site on our
wiki<http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/JSG/JA-SIG+Governance>
. Nominations and nominee statements will be posted there, as well. More
information, and a schedule for the nominating and voting processes, will be
distributed next week in a Call for Nominations issued by a recently formed
JA-SIG Elections Committee appointed by the Board. Serving on the
ElectionsCommittee are:

Carl Jacobson, University of Delaware, (Chair)
David Koehler, Cornell University
Deborah Smith, CONCENTRA-CMS, (JA-SIG Administrator).

Questions about the election process or the new organizational model are
welcome.

Jonathan Markow
JA-SIG Board Chair
