We are going down the YourKit route but before that, we've upgraded the kernel,
mysql and java on the server (not tomcat) and this is our first full day
through without reaching into swap. Unfortunately, we did not do each component
separately so I can't verify which one was the culprit.

Still going to get a memory dump but it seems like the problem is solved.
