We used the solution that VT has on their middleware wiki:

http://www.middleware.vt.edu/doku.php?id=middleware:cas:client#sct_banner_integration

We got it working, but ultimately didn't put it into production.
However, that decision had nothing to do with the solution.

For what it's worth, I believe Banner 8 will be CAS ready.
