I think others *will* in fact want to build their own package, which is part of
the reason I think this will work better outside of the project's tree, (read:
there is no way to do this in way that will work for everyone).
For anyone who needs a Debian-based package, I suggest that we collaborate on
http://github.com/eevans/cassandra-debian/tree. Folks needing site-specific
customizations, or builds for other distros (which I expect will not be
uncommon), can manage these in their own branches which are periodically merged
with the common base.
