New patchset attached. Old patches 2 and 3 were squashed together as
predicted, and some fixes were made to 01. New patches are

sub splits: split node ranges into smaller groups of keys (currently
hardcoded to 4096)

I'd like to get whatever else falls under the heading of "the least we can
possibly do and be useful" done and call this ticket good, and add enhancements
in future tickets.
