I'm using the newest version and have a confirmation from the author of the jQuery.Validator plugin that indeed it uses the *name *of an element for doing it's operations. It's also not recommended to change the plugin (as told by the author) to use the id... On the other hand Monorail uses the *id *of an element to identify elements during the validation process :-(
