I don't think routing works how you expect. It doesn't convert: .../controllerName/searchresult.ashx?categoryId=23
into .../controllerName/categoryName As you said. In fact it works in the opposite way. The only way it affects what you see in your browser address bar is as you've mentioned - when you click a hyperlink generated by the $Url.Link heper.
