It should be simple enough to build a function to do it (extend HQL) and ICriteria that handles this.
ICriterion is a simple interface, after all.
AbstractCriterion is a little more complex but not really a challange.

The real challange is getting a real way to translate between the xml query funky syntax that SQL uses.
