I have the same problem. A way could be to create a transient container
object which references a persistent existing object. You have in the
mapping file the possibility the specify a special set-method for the
referenced object (which i. e. used only from mapping framework). Here the
unmarshalling framework set the unmarshalled object. to the reference, now
you can lookup the right and so on. If you need an example, please let me
