The method clearly exists and has for some time now. My only guess is
that somewhere in your classpath exists an old version of Castor and
this is being found before the new version that you downloaded and
compiled.
I've run all my test cases and they are working just fine.
And you can look in XMLClassDescriptorImpl.java and see that this method
exists.
Sorry for your troubles, but it appears that you have a classpath issue.
