What do you mean by programmatically? Can't an attribute just be
added to the db field mapping with a name like 'dbprovided' and a value of
[true|false]? Wouldn't that be more in line with a framework?

Adam,
For the id column you must use a key generator (see
http://castor.exolab.org/key-generator.html). For the timestamp
column, you need to do it programatically.
