I found that what you described is true. I got some
better performance by preloading the dependencies.
I did not define the dependent class as actually
dependent, due to the problem you described of not
being able to fetch them independently.
I then set the dependent class to be cached, e.g.
<cache-type type="time-limited" capacity="300"/>
And then I select the dependent classes (all of them,
in my case; reading the whole table). Then, I select
all the master classes, and the dependent classes are
pulled from the cache to satisfy the dependency.
That made my performance tolerable.
