Castor bases what it retrieves on the mapping file, and one workaround is to have an additional mapping that does not have objects referenced that you don't need for the query and the display. You will have to go to your full mapping if you want to do any kind of full update, but that too can be done on the fly, at least with the last CVS version I have.
