Unfortunately, I cannot provide a detailed breakdown. The details
were compiled into a research paper for a past employer. I do have
a growing list of object-relational mapping tools at one of my web
sites [http://www.bsnyder.org/] but beyond that, there are no
side-by-side comparisons I can offer. What I can tell you is that
out of all the OR mapping tools available during the period of
June/July of 2001, I found that four were really fairly mature and
only three of those were truly usable in an enterprise. Listed in
order, they were TOPLink, Castor and OJB. After that was CocoBase
and all the other stuff that has come about in the last nine months
in response to the Sun JDO spec. TOPLink is ***extremely*** expensive
and out of the question for most projects. OJB has matured a good
amount over the last nine months and does have a nice design. Castor,
I believe, is poised for big changes to begin very soon. Also,
Castor is the oldest Open Source OR mapping tool. It was started
long before Sun envisioned the JDO spec. Beyond that, I'm a committer
for Castor, so I'm biased ;-)
