Marshalling uses a Writer or a ContentHandler - so you could use an appropriate Writer such as OutputStreamWriter or write yourself a ContentHandler.
As far as I am aware an OutputStreamWriter does not have to write to a file.
However I'm relatively new to Java so I could be wrong.
