I don't want to provide an additional jar. This can be easily handled at compile time by using the ant.java.version property to determine the JVM version and keying on this to include the proper chunk of code for that JVM version for compilation. I've done this before for items of this exact nature (JVM version dependent code inclusion and compilation) and it works like a charm.
