In XML the following characters must be escaped as shown:
& &
< <
> >
' '
" "
Don't know why you're having problems with '?' I'm afraid.

binding, and the returned XML get messed up whenever I have characters
like '?', or '&' ...
Can anyone help me out in finding out how to avoid, or to escape those
