Hi Bruce,

One additional constraint that might help (for JDO apps) would be to suggest
that everyone creates the app using a database that everyone can get - I
suggest MySQL. That way, db schemas supplied with competition entries will be
easily set up by others without having to rework the SQL and the mapping... or
obtain a JDBC driver. People could always supply alternative mappings/schema
for their favourite db as well if they want to.

Cheers,

Patrick

Subject: [castor-user] Castor sample code contest

Earlier this week, it was suggested that we should have a Castor sample
code contest. Keith and I both thought that this sounded like a good
idea. Therefore, this message is to solicit ideas for the contest.

Keith indicated that he is really interested to see how people have
worked around limitations and exploited features of Castor to get the
job done. Not only will this be a fun competition, but it will also be a
good learning experience, even for the committers. It's not often that
we get to see the complete solution of how people are using Castor. Most
of the time we just get to see little chunks of code here and there.

Below are some requirements that I've thought up on my own just to start
off:

1) All entries must be self-contained and must include an Ant or Maven
build descriptor to compile, package, deploy and execute the application.

2) Entries can be any type of Java application including stand alone
Java apps, applets, .wars or .ears.

3) Entries will probably be posted on the Castor website, so please get
permission wherever necessary.

I'm wondering about even trying to offer prizes for the contest. I have
no idea what we'd offer yet, bu it's a cool idea.

Please chime in and offer your opinions and ideas. I want to hear what
the community has to say about this.

Bruce
