Interestingly enough when I remove the 'extends'
atribute from the class description in the mapping
file  and keep the same class heirarchy the problem
goes away.

I do not see the exception given below which I was
getting earlier, and the refernce is resolved: 

ValidationException: unable to resolve reference:
application.

Is this a bug ?
