tf ... I'm going to try it next summer myself. But I won't take your bet based on the below set of conditions cause number 7 doesn't simulate the conditions that cause me concern. I'm most likely to fall off making a sail change, and under such conditions I have the tiller lashed and the boat set up on about an 80 degree reach. She goes a LONG time that way without changing course significantly.
(One of the rules I'm thinking of creating for myself is to heave to to do any sail change or other work forward of the mast.) All I can point to to defend my post was what others who have tried it said on the other forum. RE whoever said they'd just swim back in ghosting conditions ... shorts, shirt, shoes, pfd, etc cause a lot of drag, you're sure not going to swim fast or far. I had an AAU record for a few years, and I wouldn't want to bet my life on my ability to keep up with a boat, dressed as above, in anything where the sails would fill. You're on something. Here's the set-up 1) I will wear my SOS pfd (I would always be wearing one S.H.'ing) 2) Condits must be < 15 kn. 3) Boatspeed no greater than displacement hull speed (no surfing waves) 4) Outboard motor on bracket (my "nautical climbing wall") 5) water temps 70 degrees F or greater (I wouldn't be S.H.'ing in colder water, mos def) 6) normal warm weather clothing (shorts, T-shirt, thong) 7) no one at tiller...boat gets to fall off/round up at the boat's discretion (boats being good at that) 8) entry into water will simulate "accidental"...no pushing or shoving 9) funds payable to my offshore account (# provided after successful completion) still in? tf darediablo Ralph E.
