All,

Actually, I didn't mean to get into this:  I was  just shocked at the price of  repowering:  It cost twice as much as my boat, including a good engine.

It's a question of use:  If I was going down to Florida, sometimes going outside,  the Evinrude would be woefully inadequate.  If you wan't to do something, you do have to pay for it.

I'm just , as I said, potzing around the Chesapeake, and the Evinrude 9.9 2-stroke,  an unusually durable engine that  I neglected, is fine for that purpose.  My costs are comparable, until it comes to repowering.

No arguments here.

I just knew we'd get to this discussion - inboard vs outboard - I guess the somewhat nice weather has delayed it's surfacing. It's all reletive, the 5411 I pulled out of Windabout was 24 years old so and until the last 2 years of it's life it performed like a champ, when I bought the boat 6 or 7 years ago the PO gave me a box full of service receipts for the boat along with some spare parts and as I best I can tell outside of normal maintenance items he spent a grand total of about $1000 on repairs. In the 6 years I had it I never spent a dime on it outside of the cost of filters and oil change - about 40 bucks a year. So if I take the roughly $6000 for the engine and divide it by 24 years thats well $250 a year plus say $100 a year over 24 years for incidentals thats only $350 amortized over the life of the engine and I've gone through a lot outboards in the past 24 years

Interesting,

I bought my C-27 for $3800.00,9( 1976) deliberately avoiding inboard
power because of the unreliablility and expense of the engine.
Just had my Evinrude 9.9 overhauled, with some minor repairs: Cost $450

This combination of engine and prop provides good acceleration and a true 7
kt cruise with the best possible fuel economy. It also provides some
reserve for wind and current. My 5411 left something to be desired with
wind and currents at the mouth of the James River with winter NW winds.

P.S. If your boat is in good condition you should be able to recoup the
cost of the engine at resale less any hours on the engine at time of sale.
Mine was well kept and is in excellent condition and we are adding a new
interior to update the boat. Should look almost like new when completed and
a heck of a lot less invested than a new 270.

Hi Robert -- can you tell us the price of your repowering? Ideally broken
out by cost of actual engine and replacement labor? My M18 works quite
well, but have always been curious if one bought and refurbished an older
boat what the brand-new-engine price would be...

Thanks,

Sebastian

Mike - The 5411 is coming out of my 1982 Catalina 27. It has 750 hours and
was overhauled a couple of years ago. We will test compression etc when we
pull it. We've decided to go with the 13.5 hp BetaMarine. Several others
have made the conversion and been very pleased. The extra hp and bigger
prop make a big difference. Will help with the tidal flow here on the James
and beating headwinds out on the Cheasepeake.

Does anybody have recommendations of repowering a C27? I'm considering
the
betamarine 16 hp to replace my Universal 5411. My 5411 would also be for
sale for anyone interested.

I'll be watching for a guy in jeans. Should be easy to spot <grin>.

Jeane and I were originally planning to be at the show all day but she's
got
a
college class that runs until noon so we won't show up until 2PM or so.
If
anyone makes plans for cocktails or dinner, please advise here so we can
meet
some of you. When I get home tonight, I'll put pictures in a message so
you
know what Jeane and I look like (Jeane's the woman who looks like a pixie;
I'm
tall with gray hair and don't look at all like a pixie).
