Not to be puttin' too fine a line on it, fer ye know, I'm sure, that there
be Two kinds of Sea Songs that be mistaken' called
"Shanties" or more correct...."Chanty"
A CHANTY.. be a Workin' song.. the beat is Up to be given Rhythm to
tasks .. Like roundin' the Capstan ...er Haulin' and such.
While
The BALLAD.. be a song to be sung in the Fo'scle. Sometimes Sad, sometimes
Happy, SOMETIMES a bit Saucy.
There are scores of such recordings ..
But I would recommend.. Any that is a Single SOLO performer and not a
group. And certainly NOT with females ..
No offense to be taken..But the Songs of the Sea were by and for Men. Seldom
by women..
The instrument should be a fiddle or an Accordion/Concertina ..
And be aware....
Many songs on today's recordings.. Aren't very Old or Traditional being
composed in just the last few years..
Look at Composer's credits and dates.. Which should be on the label..
