HI Bob, I built Bob's A-Frame out of 2X4s and heavily overlapped them. I think that it cost me about $90 to build the A frame, buy the bolts and pully and line. I bought very streatchy lines and would not recommend using any lines with any streatch in them. The 2x4's were in-adaquate and bow'ed out so much that one of my helpers through for sure that they would snap. I swore after doing this to get off the dime and just pay for the mast step, which I have done several times since. If you really want to do this, re-inforce the 2x4's or substitute for 2x6's, use non stretch line, use 3 helpers or more.
