Peabody isn't the only soggy place in Massachusetts.  Downtown Haverhill is under water from the Merrimack & Amesbury has problems created by the Merrimack.  We drove along the river this afternoon and everyone who has put their docks out have to climb uphill to get to their boat, that is after they wade in hip deep water on the gangway.  The current in the river is running so fast that the only time you can see mooring balls is when the tide is coming in otherwise they just look like bumps.  Our club drops all of the moorings in the fall & brings them up in the spring so with all of the water coming downriver pulling all the trees & junk with it raising the moorings will be a real challenge plus those moorings that have been raised will only catch whatever debris is floating by putting a lot of pressure on the ball & risking loosing the mooring.

One of our members lost his boat.  It was an open cockpit power boat that capsized more than likely due a battery that couldn't keep up with the amount of rain.  Newburyport has received over 13" of rain so far & we are expecting another 3" - 5" tonight & tomorrow plus there is now talk of another storm on Friday.  If this keeps up we will be able to launch our boat from our backyard, and we live on a hill!

We'll just call you Noah...

I have family in Rockport, Lowell and Somerville MA, Nashua, Pelham and Manchester NH.  All but Somerville (on a hill near Tufts U) are busy pumping out their basements today.  Last I heard, the Merrimack was 5+ feet above flood stage and heading for 8 or 9'.  I've had several only-half-joking remarks from siblings who want to drive to MD and borrow my dinghy.

I know some of the troughs in the roller-coaster section of US1, I'm not surprised that it is closed down.  Hope you folks up there dry out and soon.

Lotta frigging water.

Mostly down at the town square, but my father in law had & has quite a bit of basement flooding when the springs around his house just about burst open.  Some of the roads have streams running over them and are passable if you have a truck.  The problem being that if it keeps up much longer some of those roads might wash away.  In the early days Peabody used to be called Brooksby because of all

US Route 1 was closed for about 5 miles.  128 from Peabody to 93 (for those who know) was a two hour crawl this morning.  I stayed home.

All this after about 10 inches in two steady days of rain.  Right now it’s let up but we have three more inches expected tonight and tomorrow.

If this keeps up the only good news will be that I’ll save a few bucks when Cheeky Monkey self launches.
