A
common cause of belt dust is rust on one or more of the pulleys degrading the
belt. This is also a cause of excessive belt stretching. This is not
uncommon on boats that over winter or are infrequently used. The remedy is
to use a steel brush on the pulleys followed by several grades of sand
paper. The final step is to paint them with high temp engine paint.
On choosing a belt it is important to note the proper width and length and
request a "HEAVY-DUTY" belt at the auto store. These usually aren't in
stock and need to be ordered, but well worth it. Don't forget to order
spares. These tips have provided me with many seasons of dependable
service. Thanks for these tips goes to the Boat US mechanic at Ft. Pierce

Subject: catalina27-talk: Fan BeltHi list,
I notice I have black fan belt specks on my alternator and it's bracket. It could be that my belt is too loose or the wrong belt.
The manual says the belt should have a one inch deflection. Is that pushing the belt to one side and measuring or both sides and measuring?
Does any one have a NAPA or other manufacturer belt number (not Universal) for a M-18 engine.
Isn't there a tool for tightneing fan belts?
Thanks,Harvey Rosenberg C-27TR #6023, 1985 M-18, Stony Point NY
