Having done this I would think that you don't have to cut a new mast gate.  Before you attach the boom you can insert the sail slugs into the original opening, raising them above the new boom point, attaching the boom afterwards & then insert the bolt rope into the boom. Or you can do it backwards, inserting the bolt rope into the unatached boom, then insert the sail slugs & install the boom. Another benefit of this would be not needing a sail slug stop for when you drop the sail, if you use one.
