I pulled up a Volvo drawing of the MD7A and you can clearly see the primary sitting aft with banjo fittings in the top of the assembly. If you call the one on the engine primary then isn’t the Racor between the tank and the engine the secondary.

I tend to think of my Racor (being first in line) as my primary and the engine mounted spin-on as the secondary. However Volvo, being an engine manufacturer apparently sees it the other way.

The first filter away from the tank takes the brunt of it so there is no telling how long before it gets clogged. Its life is in the years to minutes range so you should carry spares. Some friends who just sailed a Pacific Seacraft Orion down the Coast had done all the prep work including having the fuel polished only to have the engine fail just as they reach the SF Bay coming out of Alameda. The tank was harboring a tar like substance that plugged the filter as soon as it was sucked into the fuel pick-up.

Subject: catalina27-talk: Secondary fuel filter - Volvo Penta

Very simple question for anyone else cursed with a Volvo Penta MD-7A. Where in the name of (your diety here) is the secondary fuel filter? Looked all over the shop manual, which, by all appearances is older than the boat, and it is not made clear where it is. If you can't answer this question, how about another one? How long can I run my engine without changing the secondary fuel filter?
