Thanks everyone for your response.  I checked the transmission fluid today and it’s OK.  A little tough to get to but it is manageable.

Is that a misprint about ATF versus AFT?  The manual does call for Type AFT “A” or GM Dextron – II.  West Marine had Dextron III but no Dextron II.

BTW, Ralph, it’s a 17mm socket.

Jack,

I don't know if anyone has answered your question yet..  but

The Dipstick is actually a kind of ..."Bolt"... on a Hurth Tranny..

It sets on the top of the housing..    It measures about 14 mm  If I remember correctly..

NOTE:  The "FULL" measure is a Groove around the bottom of the Bolt..

Don't fill above that groove..   the tranny doesn't take much oil.

I'll include a graphic as seen on the Hurth Transmission Owner's Manual..

Best,

Folks,

Can you tell me where the dipstick is for checking the transmission fluid?

Thanks,

It will take approx 1/3 quart of ATF.  I can't get to the drain plug on mine because it is too close to the bilge.  I suck it out of the dip stick hole with one of those little plastic pumps that fit in a quart bottle of oil.

It's time to drain and replace the transmission fluid in my Universal M-18.
I've never done this before. Does anyone know approximately how much fluid
it will take? I'm assuming I'll have to access the drain plug by crawling
into the port lazarette. Any words of advice on this job? Thanks.
