As some of the members have responded to your question on how to check the switch. To my knowledge there are two ways to check the contacts in the switch.
 
1. one is to use the ohm function on any digital or analog meter after you have disconnected the power to the switch (12 volts will blow the meter). When you check each contact the readings should be less then five (5) ohms [zero (0) is ideal] .
 
2. The method of using the voltage scale on a meter while cranking the engine is really a better method if you can do it as it will tell you what is really happening. With the switch in the off position you should read 12 volts between the common (ground) on the back of the switch and both contacts for position #1 and #2 when you switch to #1 position you should read zero (0) volts. when you try to crank the engine it should stay at zero volts .
 
my switch was so far gone that method 1 showed it to be bad.

What switch had the bad connection?  Do you mean the 1-Both-2 Battery relay swith?
