Sorry to be responding so late. I did not install remote controls, since I was trying to keep the cost down. I also wanted the flexibility of being able to remove the engine and either sell it for another purpose, or else use it on a dinghy. It turns out that when the tiller handle is tilted up the end of it aligns with the top of the hull, so it is easy for me to reach.
I bought the Honda 8HP and it has a mechanism that is used to adjust the angle, The Catalina 27 doesn't have much of an angle, so I did not need a wedge.
