Both way to aggressive an adhesive - I've seen gelcoat come off removing something put on with even 4200. I use either 3M bedding or Boat Life. You want to put it on and then just tighten down enough to get an even spread and then let it sit a day and then tighten down the rest of the way makes a nice flexible gasket. Another trick is to counter sink the bolt holes slightly so the bedding gets down around the bolt. When you tighten things down don't let the bolt twist or you'll break the nice seal you just made.
