When I first got my boat I had one injector that was so dirty it was basically not doing anything. As a result my maximum RPM under load was under 2200. The mechanic charged me two hours time to diagnose problem (I had a pretty good idea after quite a bit of diagnosing) to take both injectors out and clean them (with steel brush) and replace them. After that I immediately could reach 3000 RPM. I don't, however, recall the engine ever having problems starting, even with one injector doing almost nothing. I did have a very dirty transom, another problem that was greatly alleviated by the cleaning.

That is somewhat just the way of things because the exhaust get below the water when motoring but it shouldn't be bad. It sounds like you may have dirty injectors. If so then the question is how much would it cost to get them cleaned or replaced. Of course you can first try one of the miracle cure in a bottle cures for dirty injectors. The engine does start fine after the first time even several houres later. but since I bought this boat two seasons ago I have had a sooty transom. That makes me think incomplete combustion. Anyway going out tomorrowso I will check it out and see how it starts this time.
